As I ponder about life in Asti, Italy...Our History begins...

I wonder if they ever thought-once they were married, that Columbo would be traveling to America - alone without Angela; his new Wife- nearly a year later; while she was nearly seven (7) months pregnant - with my Grandpa Louis?  To leave Italy to come to America - no English as far as I know, that had to be one of the bravest things to do during those times.  With thirty(30) dollars in their pockets, a dream in their hearts, and family to be with in America, soon their lives would mold into generations to come.  Remember, way back then, there was no internet; minimal information at libraries, and everything was difficult to come by.  This new adventure led the new beginnings of my Italian Gavello Family to now be my "mi Italiana Immigrato Famiglia en America"!

Years ago, just to find a book explaining the differences in the two languages of Italian and English at the time of the 1800's to the Early 1900's was not easy to have.  Unless you knew someone that spoke the two different languages, more than likely you would have needed to wait until arriving in the United States; where other Italian Immigrants traveled: having to learn the language themselves.  From then we grew into a lovely direction in family; some going their own directions; we grew in life, language, knowledge.  Then one day, my Grandpa Louis surprised me as he handed me a contract to type.  This was regarding his new Patent "Escallonia Terri" in 1981.  There I was in 1982, his Granddaughter, 'Terri', sitting & typing her first legal document at 19.  I continued to grow in life to sing opera, play the piano, write music, perform, and teach music, and that's the just the beginning.  Then I began Up With People Legal in 2012 to advocate & assist the Elderly & Disabled.

Where those whom risked everything, left everything behind to come to the best place on Earth; America was their dream: they had heard so much about this wonderful place.  To work, have a family, go to Church, and live your life in a place only those whom could afford to travel would go to experience the USA.  This is what the Gianoglio & Gavello Families did; this is our home.  But our hearts are in Italy with the rest of our Famiglia.  To this day we still have Cousins and others taking caring for our family home there.

When Columbo Gavello purchased property in the Richmond Hills, as below you'll see the "First House in the Richmond Hills"; contribution to the City of Richmond runs deep in the Gavello family.  I'm researching the original property that was purchased by Columbo, as I was told as a child, we either gave several acres or sold acres of our property to the City of Richmond.  Once I find out, I will place that history here.

In my Famiglia di Gavello web page, you'll learn a little more about the Gavello's & Gianoglio's building a life from a suitcase; living the American Dream, and falling in love with the San Francisco Bay Area.  It is here you will see the beginning of the love for the other City by the Bay - Richmond, California.

In the research for this family project, the internet has played a unique part to gather all the details; and I did find the 'Details'.  The property Columbo built his house on soon became what is now called "The Arlington Hills".  When the years passed, there's a few parks in those hills that were scuffed by the shoes of my ancestors, Columbo was an achiever; a builder; a lover of trees and plants.  He planted and arranged design of the Oak Trees in Alvarado Park - a branch off of "Wild Cat Canyon" - it's the little park with big ideas.  In this historic land document series, you'll see C. Columbo Gavello's name as a "Contributor of Trees".  We are farmers; we grow trees, have lots to do with plants we see daily even today, and we are earth dwellers; that's what the history says, and it's what I know.

In the Library of Congress, Historical Contribution is clearly noted in this Historic American Landscapes, a National Park Service Survey was done pertaining to the Richmond Park System.  In 1989, Louis Gavello, my Grandfather, interviewed with the for East Bay Regional Parks District in 1989.  I actually remember when Grandpa told me he was speaking to the news about Alvarado Park...it had something to do with Great Grandpa Columbo Gavello.  The stories my Grandpa had about what his Father did for the City of Richmond, just fantastic the "Old School" ways back then.

Louis E. Gavello was the Foreman in charge of the Parks Department for the City of Richmond.  Grandpa worked for the City of Richmond Parks Department beginning in 1946.

The 'La Lorraine' -Arrived at New York-Ellis Island on April 28, 1907

Traveling with her Son, Luigi Gavello, Angelina had a big travel ahead.  My Mom told me the following on March 10, 2017, "The travel from Ellis Island was extremely difficult for your Great Grandmother and Great Grandfather.  They traveled by horse & buggy occasionally, but majority of travel across the United States to San Francisco/Oakland area was on foot.  Barefoot once the shoes wore out, Grandpa said that his Father, Columbo put cardboard type paper/board in his shoes.  When they got to California, they still had much way to travel.  I remember when they were in Nevada, they took a carriage with other people coming this way.  Very hard life they lived in travel just to get here."

Together, at last, Columbo & Angelina!

May of 2007, finally they began re-building their lives together.  Columbo worked hard in Santa Cruz, saving enough money to purchase a small piece of land in the Richmond Hills, California.  Upon this hill, he built his house.  There's a photo to the bottom of this web page showing the 'House on the Hill', this is a smaller version of it .  In front of the house is Angelina, Luigi, and his new little sister Josephine, on the ladder at the house front is Columbo.

This is Great Grandfather Columbo & Great Grandmother Angelina.  Columbo came 1st in 1906, Angelina came 2nd with my Grandpa Louis E. Gavello in 1907.

Our very musical Famiglia with their musical instruments.  I never heard them play, but I'm sure they played at the Galileo Club once in awhile.  Maybe there's even a recording somewhere in the family archives?  Soon to come; more information about this musical side of my life.  I myself am a Music Instructor ~ Voice & Piano.  My two brothers as well are musicians.  My Mother played the Piano.  Mom wanted to sing, so because I couldn't be there with her at the time, in 2013, over the phone, I tau ght Mom how to sing!  One day I heard her singing a song...it just came natural to her.

My Grandma Maude (maiden: Tamblyn) Gavello also sang absolutely beautifully (not in this photo).  In Church she would always point to the 'Melody' and say, "Come on, sing along with everyone...da da da...dee dee dee...".  Beauty, my Grandma & my Mom, beauty in my Great Aunty Josie & Gemma, as similarities in face features with Great Grandmother Angela (Gianoglio) Gavello; as all the 'Gavello & Gianoglio Women' have this undeniable beauty; blue eyes, Brown or Auburn or Red hair, and the face of Royal Princess Beauty, as I see it.  My Grandpa Louis and I were one of the lucky ones that have a partial green & blue eye.  I haven't heard yet of any other like that in the family; but I'm still investigating.

Telling Our Family Story Through Photos & History

Christoforno Columbo Gavello

...and time will tell when the Family History will be Completely Compiled...
More photos are on the way.  As I'm putting my investigation together, as muc h time as it takes, I could only hope of being be finished soon.  But the gathering of information takes the longest time due to needing complete verification of events.
Please stay tuned for more information regarding our Family Treasures & History found in photos, letters, notes, and corners of our lives yet to be discovered.  It will be together, one day.  Thank you.  :)
This is Christoforno Columbus Gavello.  The photo was taken in 1901 in Italy   He would have been approximately eighteen (18) years old in this photo.  The notes on the photo seems to be the same writing on most of the photos from this period.  I will one day find out who wrote our Family's History; until then, on to our next photo.
Below, Columbo & Possibly Guiseppe Gavello is in this photo...

Which Man is Columbo & Guiseppe in photo Above?

Above is a photo of Colombo at Davenport Cement Co. in Davenport near Santa Cruz. Third from right may be Colombo, that is what one family member feels.  I looked at several other photos, and my conclusion is we have several members of our Gavello & Gianoglio Famiglia in this photo.  First, based on my investigation, I feel the man with his right arm leaning on the "Steel Re-barb" the 2nd on the Left is be Columbo.

Taking into account it's only three (3) years or so before in that photo from 1901 of Columbo.   There's also the man sitting down with the mustache at the top behind the man next to the torn shirt man, but the two photos put together match not only his right ear, but his nose tip as well.  Then, one of the others in the photo is possibly Columbo's Brother Guiseppe; as they would work together there.  Taken in 1906.  Putting two of the photos that match up...as to which man is Columbo, I place these two photos together with very similar in features, as I mention.  Below is my choice.

Colombo at San Lorenzo Tannery in Santa Cruz. Colombo may be in the center with skin over his arm looking to the right.  That was suggested by a member of our Famiglia.  I feel the man holding the tannery piece is Columbo.  And his Brother - Guiseppe (and another brother, as I'm researching all of Columbo's Brother's) is somewhere in this photo as well.  Tap the photo and learn more history about the Tannery.

Coming Up Next...

Josie and Gemma were born in Santa Cruz California.  First in 1908,  Josie was born.  Next, in 1910, Gemma was born.  They both married; having families themselves.

With our Gavello Famiglia migrating from Asti, Italy, this may have been the beginning, moving to America was to live as some would say a more bountiful life.

Sometime before February 26, 1906, My Great Uncle Guiseppe Gavello came to America.  I need to pull those records together at this time.  There was his family as well that I'm needing history for.  Once I get it all, it will be placed here.

Christoforno Columbo Gavello

March 5, 1906 arrived at Ellis Island from Italy on February 26, 1906 - Christoforno Columbo Gavello (22 years old) traveled from Port Havre, Italy to Ellis Island USA - alone.  He landed at Ellis Island on March 5, 1906.  Columbo was visiting his Brother Guiseppe Gavello at Hotel Italia in Santa Cruz, California.  Just after he arrived on March 5, 1906, there was an Earthquake at approx. 9:30pm; that must have been the 'Shake Warning'.  Then nearly a month later, the San Francisco 1906 "7.9 magnitude" Earthquake happened at 5:12am on April 18, 1906.  The ground shook so much that it led to the Great Fire of 1906 as well.  The very day Columbo arrived, there was the first Earthquake giving warning.  Okay Great Grandpa Columbo...I bet you probably felt that shake too.  Columbo, as seen in the photos, obtained employment in various fields once he arrived.  He was hired to help rebuild after the 1906 fire & earthquake.  One company he worked at ~ Davenport Cement Co., had many projects that Italian Immigrant's were hired to do, as many repairs were needed in San Francisco after the 1906 earthquake & fire.

Note:  A mistake in the Ships Manifest led me to do further research...where's Great Grandmother Angela Gavello?  Where's my Grandpa Louis?  The Port Master writing down the information, misspelled "Gavello" with "Garello".  It was the power of investigating human error to find..."The Humans".    As I researched many things, one thing for sure, you must get a 'Free Account' at the Ellis Island Website

Angelina (Angela) (Gianoglio) Gavello

April 28, 1907 -arrived at Ellis Island - Angela (Gianoglio) Gavello (24 years old) traveled from Port Havre, Italy on April 20, 1907 to Ellis Island USA w/Luigi Gavello

Louis 'Luigi' E. Gavello

April 28, 1907 -arrived at Ellis Island - Luigi/Louis E. Gavello (9 months old) traveled from Port Havre, Italy to on April 20, 1907 to Ellis Island USA w/Angela Gianoglio Gavello

&

Line #5 is:  Alex Gianoglio

Circled is Lines 5 & 9.  Line #5 is Alex Gianoglio listed as 'Brother in Law of Columbo Gavello'.  And Circled is Line #9 which is Paulo Gavello listed as 'Brother of Columbo Gavello'.

Paulo Gavello

April 16, 1912 was Paulo Gavello Brother to Columbo (40 years old) together with Alex Gianoglio.  Possibly spelled 'Palo'.  There's a letter shown larger below, that Paulo wrote to Giusseppi & Columbo, his dear Brothers that had already traveled to America.  Paulo missed his Brothers something terrible; it's shown in this letter he wrote.  At the time Paulo wrote this letter, it would have been just before he came to America with Uncle Alex Giagnolio.  Possibly in January or February of 1912.

This is my Great-Great Uncle Paulo

Alessandro 'Alex' Giagnolio

April 16, 1912 was Alessandro 'Alex' Gianoglio (16 years old) together with Paolo Gavello.  The notes on the ship manifest indicate Alex is coming to America to see his Brother-in-Law to Columbo Gavello- they were Brothers in Law as my Great Uncle Alex was the Brother of Angela Gianoglio-married name'Angela Gavello', she married Columbo on February 25, 1905 in Montaldo Scarampi, Italy ...just before Columbo took off on to America on the Ship La Gascgone a French Built in the 1800's.   Photos added with more information soon. This is my Great Uncle Alex.

Great Uncle Paulo Gavello

Letter Circa. 1908 to 1911 from Paulo Gavello to all his Brothers in America

This is the translation of the letter that Paulo Gavello wrote, then mailed from Montaldo Scarampi to the United States of America; where our Gavello & Gianoglio Familglia traveled to.  They were missed over all those years, I'm sure.

Then, in April of 1912, Paulo traveled with my Great Uncle Alex Giagnolio to see the family; as it had been several years since he saw his famiglia.  This is the translation from the original letter.  I hope to add a photo of the original envelope, letter, and anything else regarding Paulo Gavello.

At the time of the early 1900's, our Famiglia farmed the Italian Hillside on our property: it was 'Survival of the Fittest' and money was not on the minds of the ones that wanted to live a good wholesome life; we all must work to make house & home for our family.  This letter is from the time where family was everything; a carrot was candy, and civilization in the real world was what some craved to experience; freedom, salary, growth.   In his letter, Great Uncle Paulo seems to be 'Holding Down the Fort' as my Mom would say, but it seems as though he has dreams that are being held back: and the Gavello's never dream, they work; and work hard.

Columbo and his Brothers made their own furniture.  The chair that Paulo is leaning on is one of our Gavello Art Designs©.  Weaved from different earthly goods, a beautiful chair perfect for the corner of a room, or out in the open such as Paulo is posing for this lovely photo.

Paulo's Letter to his Brothers in the USA:

Here's Paulo's original letter written on a post card:

The letter reads:

"Dear Brothers:

For now I would like to tell you that I am in good health and the same I hope is for you.  I would like to know if it is possible to have some jobs there where you are.  Here is not much about salary.
Dear Brothers I inform you that Nonna's Grandfather is in hospital in Torrino.  In the hospital he went through full examination, and they sent him home.

Goodbye, (adornment) your brother, Paulo"

This woven basket style & wood chair where this photo of my Great Uncle Paulo Gavello was taken, was probably made somewhere between 1870 and 1905, by someone in my Gavello family.  My Great Grandfather was a professional basket weaver; making all the storage containers for the house in basket weave.  I even remember a basket weaved in the shape of a suitcase; with a closure & handle and a top & bottom as if it came from a store.  Our family is talented, and throughout the early years of the 1890's to 1910's, we migrated from Italy to America in search for a better way.

Drawing by Barbara Gavello

In approximately 2015, Barbara was sketching; something she loved to do once in awhile.

Barbara was drawing Theresa; as she had her hair up in a bun, Barbara wanted to capture her beauty; as she said.

Theresa is Columbo's Great Granddaughter.

As Gavello Art© is diverse, Theresa saw a different look in what her Mother drew; so she the colored & defined this sketch while Barbara was sketching something else .
The creativity shown in Gavello Art©, as well as in The Gavello Family Collection©, you'll see the vast & ever changing styles of
Gavello Art©.

In the News...

The 25th Wedding Anniversary of

Angelina & Columbo Gavello

on February 25, 1930

The 25th Wedding Anniversary of Angelina & Columbo Gavello on February 25, 1930.  See the article here, stating "Gavello Home is Scene of Celebration".  This photo was taken in honor of their special day.  A few years later, Angelina died.  God bless you, Great Grandmother Angelina (Angela).  This same photo is shown larger above.

Here's the News Article regarding the 'Grand 25th Anniversary Celebration.  A last name correction with my Grandma Maude Tamblyn - news paper has her listed as "Famblyn".  At this time, my Grandpa Louis Gavello was not yet married to my Grandma Maude Tamblyn.  As this was in 1930, it would have been in 1931 or 1932 when they were married.  What a wonderful time they had at this 'Wedding Anniversary Gala' for them, 'Christening for Baby Bongio', Happy Birthdays to Grandpa Louis & Great Grandpa Columbo - both in June.

This celebration was at their home they built with their own hands, in the 'Hills of Richmond' on 946 Sonoma Avenue.  Below is a little history of the First house on the Hill in the Richmond Hills located in beautiful Northern California.

Many points in our Gavello History were made in this one article:
  • Christening of Baby Bongio, but it states  states 'Gongio' in the article.
  • The Birthdays of Columbo & Angela
  • Music furnished by D. B. Lamperto & C. Soldavini
  • Games, Dancing, Gifts & Good Wishes from their Friends & Family
This is from the article:

"A Silver Wedding Celebration, Christening, and Birthday Party occasioned a gathering yesterday at the home of Mr. & Mrs. Columbo Gavello at 946 Sonoma Avenue.  The Infant daughter of Mr. & Mrs Bongio was christened at a pretty ceremony.  Mr. & Mrs Coilumbo were fetted on their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary and Gavello and his Son Louis observed their Birthdays.  A dinner party assembled many friends and the afternoon was spent in dancing & games, with music furnished by D. B. Lamperto & C. Soldavini.  The honored guests were the recipients of many gifts and showered with flowers & good wishes from their friends..."

The time-period in 1930 brought extensive history into the Gavello Famiglia.  We had weddings, births, 25th wedding anniversary, and all celebrated with warm family & friends gathering during special occasions.  When all these occasions were mentioned, it seemed as though this would have been in June of 1930.  They must have had a 'Combination Celebration'.  What a fun time.  These were the days; the good ole' days we long for today; look at as a wondered yesterday, and the hope of remembrance in the years to come.  This is us:  Famiglia di Gavello.

Columbo Gavello's 70th Birthday Celebration

Sunday,June 21, 1956

News Article of June 21, 1956

This was Columbo's 70th Birthday! As Great Grandpa Columbo's Birthday was June 6, 1956 (June 6, 1884 - that's the date he was born), the date of his party was June 21, 1956; a few weeks later.  The Party was one (1) day before my Grandpa Louie's Birthday was June 22nd, and he would have been 50 years old (June 22, 1906 - that's the date he was born).

25th Wedding Anniversary Photo

Columbo & Angelina Gavello
Circa. February 25, 1930
Photo below ~ Italian to E nglish Translation:

Great Grandfather Christoforno Columbo Gavello and Great Grandmother Angela Gavello in the photo, from my understanding of Italian, I will translate this:

This photo was taken in 1930; it would be their 25th Wedding Anniversary on February 25, 1930.   The date of their Marriage was on February 25, 1905.  They were married in Montaldo Scarampi, Italy that date.  Township of Montaldo Scarampi, Italy brief History:  Approximately 323 people live in this little part of Italy; I bet it's just beautiful.  The photos at the top of this page are showing the Township in Asti, Italy.   This photo was taken on 2-25-1930 at the Parker Studios ~ on 1920 MacDonald Avenue in Richmond, California.   They both were just gorgeous; dressed in their 'Dinner Attire' for celebration of their 'il Date' de Matrimonio'.  I didn't know if it was Angela or Columbo that wrote at the top & bottom of all these photos, until I spoke with my Cousin.  I found out it was Columbo that did all the writing on each photo...awwe.

The entire collection seems to have the same ink, penship-my new word (the word Penship is perfect because it could be a 'man' or a 'woman' that it's being addressed to.), and writing styling it seems.  One day I'll hopefully have these little details.  In the future, I will be creating an entire website about our family history.  Until then, it's bits & pieces of history; beyond imagining the lives they led: if a thank you could reach the heavenly clouds; I wave for a silent butterfly kiss: until we all meet...

Thank You All.  Love You All.

Painting of Angela & Columbo 1930's

This is a painting of Great Grandmother Angelina and Great Grandfather Columbo somewhere in the 1930's.

I don't have a very good photo of this, as I had to take a photo of my computer screen, but it at least is here; what I have.  When I obtain a better photo of this, I will place it here.

I met only one in this photo, my Great Uncle Alex.  What a great man he was; so kind; a pleasant personality; always, always smiling & speaking Italian.  My Great-Grandmother Angela and I look very similar; as my Mother told me many times.

As I learn more details about my Great Grandmother Angela, Great-Great Aunt Margarita, my Great-Great Uncle Luigi, and my Great Uncle Marco, Uncle Paulo Gavello and others that mi Famiglia have maybe never heard of.  I will place the information here.

in 2018, we take a look back...

As I begin my own journey through time, now I share some of our family history.  For many years, my Mom and I were wanting to put together a timeline when the Gavello's arrived to America, but she would never see this research, as she passed on May 10, 2017, I know she would be happy I'm getting this done.  Although it looks like a great start, to compile information verifying that history is correct, will take some time.  When finished, what an accomplishment it will be.

This is our beginning as Gavello's & Gianoglio's traveled from Montaldo/Asti, Italy to Ellis Island, New York-USA.  Shortly before my Grandfather Louis E. Gavello (friends & family called him "Louie") was born, Great Grandpa Christoforno "Columbo" Gavello traveled by boat to live in America!  I share as much as I find in my research, and continue to provide more as time goes by.

Although the anticipation of the birth of his first child; my Grandpa Louis would be on June 22, 1906, a few months earlier on February 26, 1906, his Father Columbo Gavello traveled from Asti, Italy to Ellis Island, New York - the USA.  It wouldn't have been until the following year, in April of 1907, that more of the Gavello & Gianoglio di Famiglia, traveled to American; settling in the San Francisco Bay Area, in Richmond, California.  They wanted to float by boat to San Francisco, but at that time, the ships only went as far as New York via Ellis Island.  (Without having some details, I will tell what I know with history as it's been handed down for generations, and show the photos.).

The paperwork states Great Grandpa Columbo boarded the Ship named the La Gasgone at Port Havre, Italy on February 26, 1906.  He traveled for approximately seven (7) days.  Then on March 5, 1906 the ship docked at Ellis Island.  Great Grandpa Colombo Gavello finally made it to America.  His Brother Guiseppe Gavello was already in America; working/living in Santa Cruz, as the notes state on line #2 of the Ship Manifest.  I'm still building the timeline when Columbo's Brother Guiseppe came to America, but I will need further details to put it all together.

On March 5, 1906, after that long journey from Italy, Great Grandpa Columbo had to cross the United States alone.  While his wife was nearly seven (7) months pregnant with my Grandpa Louis, he traveled (as far as we know & what we were told over the years...) through stormy weather, water, streams and hills for the dream of being in the best place on Earth -San Francisco, California. Great Grandpa Columbo began to settle in the San Francisco Bay Area.  Working as much as he could to prepare for his wife & child.  From March to June, I could only think of the worry he had being thousands of miles away from his pregnant wife, Angela.  As the months passed, he missed the birth of his Son, my Grandpa Louis, as he was born on June 22, 1906 in Italy.

As history is written, my Great-Grandmother Angela Gavello and my Grandpa Louis Gavello traveled from Montaldo, Italy to Ellis Island, New York, on the Ship La Lorraine.  Great Grandmother Angela because she had her hands full with her first child in her arms - my Grandpa Louis.  As Great Grandpa Columbo came to America first, he wasn't alone once he arrived in San Francisco, my Great Uncle Guiseppe Gavello was already here waiting for him.

To get a "House Set Up" for Great Grandmother Angela and their new baby boy - Louis Elton (Gianoglio) Gavello, it would take cement, wood, windows, a roof, lots of work and a house built strong with love.  The details that I have in my memory, photos, conversing with family, this is what has been discovered so far; but there's so much more that I'll add as time goes on.

Great Grandpa Columbo built things, he loved the color 'Blue'; he was also a Farmer in Italy where acres of vines of beautiful wine grapes grew; so he had good working knowledge of life, survival, and had a determination to get the work done.  Within a few years of being in the Bay Area, he built the first house on a hill in Richmond, California.  We now call this "The Richmond Hills".

Great Uncle Alex Gianoglio was my Great Grandmother Angela’s Brother, as mentioned above.  As our family indicates it's interesting following the family tree, however with research, nothing further beyond Colombo’s and Angela’s parents were found in the family history. They would be my 'Great-Great Grandparents' - as their names are: Giovani Lunenso Gavello & Maria Partromio Gavello for the 'Gavello' side, and Luigi Gianoglio and Margarita Gianoglio for the 'Gianoglio' side.

When I began designing this specific web page, I chose this color brown for this page because they traveled through the 'Dirt' all the way on foot, then they built into the foundation of 'Dirt', to then a beautiful "House on the Hill", as the photo below shows the work of talented craftsmanship.

A little history:  When this photo was taken, as many of our family photos from America seem to be from the Parker Studios, I'll verfiy if it's the same studio at another time.  But it appears to be that my Grandpa Louis is approximately 16-19 years old.  Aunt Gemma & Aunt Josie look to be maybe from 13 to 16 years old, and Rico was about 3-6 years old.  This photo was possibly taken in 1922 to 1925.  Once I obtain further information about the time-period in this photo, I'll update it here.

Mother Angela Gavello/my Great Grandmother: A very hard working woman; she was so very talented.  In her house, everything was "Hand-Made" and "Home-Made".  Nothing was left for someone else to do; she did mostly everything you could imagine running the house with five (5) Children.  Love you.

Father Christoforno Columbo Gavello/my Great Grandfather:  A very hard working man, he built things.  He kept himself & our family safe through the travel from Italy to America.  In those days, that would have been a challenge; everyone made it happily; even though they traveled over a year apart, they made it safely.  When he arrived to San Francisco, he began to form friendships in the building trades.  Then, getting ready for his baby & Wife, he built a house 30-minutes North of San Francisco; on an "Open Pasture of Hills & Acres" in Richmond, California.  The photo and description is just below this photo.  He was also instrumental as a Co-Founder of the Galileo Club.  Love you.

Allesandro "Alex" = is the Brother to my Great Grandmother Angela Gianoglio Gavello (Alex isn't shown in this photo) is the Uncle to Louis (my Grandpa) & the Brother-in-Law of Grandpa Columbo , uncle to my Great Aunt Josephine, my Great Uncle Rico, and to my Great Aunt Gemma Gavello.  He was my Great Uncle Alex.  He was always wanting everyone to be happy.  He was so joyous; kept me real busy with different things.  I remember going to his house all the time and Aunt Mary -Uncle Alex  were married; lived close to us.  They always had Hershey's Chocolate 6-Pack waiting for me to open.  I had chocolate all over the place, but it was fun...& yummy!  Love you.

Josephine is the Sister to Louis (my Grandpa),  my Great Aunt Gemma, my Great Uncle Rico and my Great Gavello.  Aunty 'Josie' was so great!  I remember many times on the holidays; she always made me laugh.  She was strong, very witty, so beautiful, and loved her family.  Love you.

Gemma is the Sister to Louis (my Grandpa), my Great Aunt Josephine, and  my Great Uncle Rico and my Great Aunt Gemma Gavello.  I remember talking with Aunty 'Gemma' about so many different things.  She was a delight.  When she giggled everyone felt her laugh.  She was wonderful.  Lovely person.  Love you.

Rico is the little boy in this photo.   Rico is the Brother to Louis (my Grandpa), my Great Aunt Josephine, and to my Great Aunt Gemma Gavello.  He was my Great Uncle Rico.  Great Uncle Rico as I heard, was a very nice man.  He died before I was born (RIP).  Love you.

Louis (my Grandpa) is the Brother to my Great Aunt Gemma,  my Great Aunt Josephine, and my Great Uncle Rico, and Louis -he's my Grandpa Gavello.  The nicest person I've ever met.  The most talented and intelligent man I've ever met!  He taught me that no matter what my interests were, to keep learning; never stop gaining knowledge throughout life.  He was an Ornamental Horticulturist, taught Horticulture, consulted nearly monthly with the Botanical Gardens at U.C. Berkeley regarding his Plant Patents.  I remember going there with him...what an interesting time.  Grandpa and I drove all up and down California delivering plants to his customers.  My Mother gave me life; Grandpa taught me all about it through the eyes of an Italian Immigrant.  He married my Grandma Beatrice Maude Tamblyn; they both raised us...Love you both, & thank you.   He named a plant after me:  the Escallonia Terri.  Love you, & thank you, Grandpa.  Love you.

Note:  My Mom used Pastels to color this photo in the 1940's.  She colored many of the black & white photos.

The First House on the Hill...

Here's the only "House on the Hill" in Richmond, California.  Some of the hills can be seen behind it...nothing there but the hills & grass.

This is approximately 1909.  On the ladder is possibly my Great Grandfather Columbo, Great Uncle Guiseppe Gavello, or one of the many friends that assisted in building 'The First House on the Hill'.  It's possible also that my Great Grandpa Christoforno we called him "Grandpa Columbo", was taking the photo...but who's on the ladder?  It's a mystery.  The others there in front of the house on the Left: is Grandpa Louie, Great Grandma Angela, and Great Aunt Josie.

The Hard-Working Gavello's

This house was built by Grandpa Columbo, my Great Uncle Guiseppe, and a few family, friends, but mostly by Grandpa Columbo.  See the Windmill - that's the Water House.  There was a little room with a small bathroom, sink, and the old-fashioned roll type-washer was there.  In the front there was a beautiful old-fashioned 'Wishing Well', but was used daily to gather the water.  I remember this house...very nice.

There's a photo I will add one day where it shows the hills empty except for the Gavello House.  I also have a photo that was taken before hey built their home; showing the bare hills.  The bare hills are showing through a little here, as what a site; one little house on the hill where now, today, there's lots of houses on this hill.  This is the lower portion of 'The Arlington Hills' in Richmond, CA.

Columbo was One of the Founders of the Galileo Club

This is the Galileo Club in Richmond, CA with a performance going on.  There's my Grandpa Columbo standing there cheering everyone on!  This is still operational today.  It's an Italian Club that was founded in the 1930's by Italian immigrants.  There was also a branch of this club called "The Columbo Club".  I have more historic photos I want to provide to the Richmond Museum.  This is one of them.

Columbo had the 1st Man-Cave...at least it was His first...

As it's proven to be a really good place for a Man to have a place to rest; a space to call his own, in the history of our Famiglia, it was a very necessary choice for Columbo Gavello.  He had a 'Man Cave' that was outside, kind of like a place with all the trimmings.  When I spoke with family, learning all about "Columbo's Pergola", and the cute set up he had; like his own little house.  Family stated to me, "It was round, made of lattice, it was about 15 feet wide, made in the shape of an oval.  He loved the color 'Blue' as everything he owned had to be blue, this was also painted blue.  The roof was was lattice, so when it rained, everything in it got wet.  The walls were made of plywood, where he placed many family photos on cardboard and nailed them up.  That's why many photos you'll see a nail hole through the photo and the cardboard. ".  So many memories; so little time in my heart to put all this on paper...or the internet to share with everyone.  I don't have the photo, but one day if I ever find one,I will put it here.

Here's Columbo in a Costume sometime in the 1940's

The Next Generation

...Columbo & Angelina Began History, Children, and Home in America

As Gemma Gavello grew, she also wanted to be a Mother, Wife, and then got married to Antonio Cincera.  They had children, and one of them was Elizabeth (Gavello/Gianoglio), who then got married to Don Anhorn came into this world, she grew to be a beautif ul woman, as also her Sister Virginia (Gavello/Gianoglio) who married Maurizio Ghezzi.  Once I have time, I will create the website called 'Famiglia di Gavello' with all the family information...you'll be entertained and reading forever, and our Famiglia will be a shining light and a click away from learning more.

Below, as you can see the beauty she is in this photo, Elizabeth is now 84 years young.  She carries the beauty of our Grandmother/Great Grandmother Angelina, and of her Mother Gemma.  Both Sisters, my 2nd Cousin Elizabeth is on the right, 2nd Cousin Virginia is in the middle, and my Mom-Barbara is on the left.

In our family tree, Elizabeth and Virginia are the Daughters of Gemma (Gavello) Cincera.  As Great Aunty Gemma was my Grandpa Louie's Sister, Elizabeth and Virginia are my 2nd Cousins, 1st Cousin to my Mom-Barbara Gavello.

This was the same day.  Left to Right: Elizabeth, Virginia, and Barbara

Columbo's 2nd Marriage to Altamia Badella

New

Columbo Christopher GavelloAfter Great Grandmother Angelina died, Columbo married for a second time to Altamia Badella.  Altamia had one child, a Daughter named Olive.

I found this photo of Columbo, Olive, and Altamia here's more information I found with it:   Columbo Christopher Gavello:BIRTH:  16 Jun 1883, DEATH 9 Sep 1956 (aged 73) Contra Costa County, California, USA, BURIAL is at St. Josephs Catholic Cemetary, Richmond, CA.  This Memorial from Find a Grave- ID  12762705 ·EMRS

Stepson of Giovanni Badella, Son of Widow Altamia Badella Gavello Badella, Father of Louis Gavello. https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/12762705/columbo-christopher-gavello

Olive Badella Gavello Traverso: This is a photo that was taken on Easter many years ago.

Aunty Olive was so wonderful.  She could cook, wow could she cook! Olive is the 'Step-Sister' of my Grandfather Louis E. Gavello, Daughter of Altamia Badella Gavello, 'Step-Daughter' to Christoforno Columbus Gavello.

The Basket Makers

Columbo loved art!   He loved making things.  I have a wonderful shelf system with a door he built in the 1920's.  There they were, Columbo and Altamia making their weaved baskets. They would make some of the most beautiful baskets and give them away, sell them, and spend wonderful time together while creating beautiful art in baskets.

The colors were very extravagant. for example, a few of the colors were rose and pink, green, blue.  All having various sizes and shapes, conforming to everyone’s basket needs.

You can see in the work area, Columbo is sitting on his weaving stool, making a basket while this photo was being taken.  Altamia is holding one of the baskets; possibly placing it in the stack filled with lots of baskets ready to be sold.  This was their time of retirement; relaxing, creating beautiful art, as they did this for fun, as well made extra money.

Remember above, Great Uncle Paulo is leaning on a 'Weaved Chair', our 'Famiglia di Gavello' is talented inso many things, furniture making is one of them.  I as well have spent many hours in my life making things, refinishing furniture.  I'll bet that Uncle Paulo and Grandpa Columbo would be proud to know through the generations, the talent still exists.

Remember above also, Columbo made 'The Columbo Bank©', the art transpires the love of life.  Through the art, the Gavello Famiglia shows how just the little things mean a lot.  One small little bank today means the world to us, because it came from love; our Famiglia.  This must be cherished throughout the years as we all have so much left to share with one another; the love of life and art will live on through the years.
